What Is Positive Intervention And How Does It Relate To Positive Handling?

Schools often search for positive handling training, behaviour management courses, or a Team Teach alternative — and find Teach+ Positive Intervention. That's by design.

Positive Intervention is what positive handling should always have been: a holistic, evidence-based system that treats physical intervention as an absolute last resort, backed by Ofqual-assessed trainers and delivered alongside access to qualified clinical and education psychologists.

Why Schools Are Switching From Traditional Positive Handling Providers

Schools searching for positive handling courses, behaviour management training, or a Team Teach alternative tell us the same thing: they want training that's more rigorous, more trauma-informed, and delivered by trainers who are independently assessed — not just internally certified.

Traditional Positive Handling Provider
Legacy internally-assessed training models
Trainers assessed internally — no independent Ofqual oversight
Physical techniques focus — limited trauma-informed psychology content
No access to clinical or education psychologists included
High-volume, generic delivery — not tailored to your school
No dedicated trainer or long-term subscription model available
Content not designed by a Chartered Clinical Psychologist
Teach+ Positive Intervention
The Ofqual-assessed, psychology-led alternative
All trainers Ofqual-assessed annually — independently verified, not self-certified
Deep trauma-informed foundation — ACEs, attachment theory, emotional intelligence
Ongoing access to clinical and education psychologists included in every package
Fully bespoke — tailored to your school's demographics, policies, and challenges
3–5 year subscription option with dedicated trainer and annual refresher
Designed by Dr Carol Sadler — Chartered Clinical Psychologist, BPS & HCPC member
Ofqual-assessed trainers means your school can be confident in the quality and independence of the assessment — something internally assessed competitors cannot guarantee.

What The Course Covers

A complete behaviour support system across six structured modules — delivered by Ofqual-assessed trainers and informed by clinical and education psychology at every stage.

01

Understanding SEMH and Trauma

Staff explore the root causes of challenging behaviour — Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), trauma, and attachment theory. A foundational module that reframes behaviour as communication and equips staff with empathy and insight.

02

Supporting SEMH Needs Through a Trauma-Informed Approach

Moving from understanding to action — this module equips staff with practical, evidence-based strategies for supporting pupils with SEMH needs day to day. Grounded in trauma-informed principles and informed by clinical psychology, staff learn to create environments where all pupils feel safe and regulated.

03

Developing Positive Intervention Skills Including Restorative Practice

The heart of the course. Staff develop verbal and non-verbal de-escalation skills, master the Aggression Curve model for early identification, and learn restorative practice approaches that repair relationships and rebuild trust after incidents. Prevention, not reaction.

04

Understanding Legal Frameworks

Full legal clarity across all relevant legislation: Education and Inspections Act 2006, DfE Use of Reasonable Force guidance, Equality Act 2010, and Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. Staff learn dynamic risk assessment and individual behaviour planning — acting with confidence, not hesitation.

05

Applying Physical Intervention

When all preventative strategies have been exhausted, staff must know how to act safely and with dignity. Gradual, graded physical techniques designed specifically for educational settings — taught only as an emergency last resort, by Ofqual-assessed trainers with real-world school experience.

06

Well-Being

No positive intervention training is complete without addressing the wellbeing of staff and pupils. This module covers post-incident debriefing protocols, staff emotional recovery, restorative conversations with pupils, and building a culture of psychological safety — supported by ongoing access to clinical and education psychologists.

What Schools Achieve After Teach+ Training

Reduction in Serious Incidents
Schools consistently report a significant fall in the number and severity of behavioural incidents — fewer exclusions, fewer injuries, fewer crises.
Staff Confidence and Retention
Staff trained by Ofqual-assessed practitioners feel genuinely confident. Reduced anxiety directly combats the teacher burnout driving retention problems in high-SEMH schools.
Stronger Ofsted Outcomes
Improved behaviour ratings, robust evidence of staff development, and demonstrable whole-school consistency — the exact evidence base Ofsted inspectors want to see.

Everything You Need To Know About Positive Handling Training

The terms are widely used interchangeably. "Positive Handling" appears in DfE guidance and focuses on safe physical responses. Teach+ "Positive Intervention" encompasses positive handling within a much broader, trauma-informed framework — prioritising prevention, de-escalation, and psychological support, with physical techniques as a last resort only.
Ofqual is the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation — the independent regulator for qualifications in England. Ofqual-assessed trainers have been independently evaluated to a regulated standard. Many competitors use internal assessment only, meaning their trainers are assessed by their own organisation. Teach+ trainers are assessed externally — giving your school independent, verifiable assurance of trainer quality.
Yes. Teach+ is a CPD Standards Office registered provider. Our training is accredited, compliant with DfE guidance, and delivered by Ofqual-assessed trainers. The course was designed by Level 3 Physical Restraint Instructors and endorsed by Dr Carol Sadler, Chartered Clinical Psychologist. It covers the same legal ground as Team Teach — and significantly more.
Far from it. Modules 1–3 and Module 6 focus entirely on understanding, preventing, and recovering from behavioural incidents without physical intervention. Module 5 (Applying Physical Intervention) is taught as an emergency-only last resort — an important but small part of a comprehensive six-module programme.
All training is delivered on-site at your school by an Ofqual-assessed Teach+ trainer. We offer full-day, half-day, and twilight session formats to suit your timetable. We cover schools across the UK and work with Thrive Education Group partner schools at a preferential rate.
All Teach+ packages include ongoing access to clinical and education psychologists — not a one-off session, but continuing support. This allows staff to consult on specific cases, wellbeing concerns, and behaviour challenges after training is complete. This level of ongoing professional support is unique to Teach+ and is included as standard in every pricing option.
